I personally would buy anything other than one of the big 4 Japs, but I've never heard to much bad about them. I suppose you'd have to own one for a few years to know for sure. |

BMW has made bikes for over 80 years. Which one are you talking about? |

Yes they are good road machines. BMW is an European motorcycle manufacturer (Bavarian) and they strive to ensure quality in their products. Even though the BMW is designed for the mountainous roads of Europe, these motorcycles are quite at home on the American roads. Even though I am a Harley enthusiast, owner of several and restore antique motorcycles, I would love to have one if I could afford it. |

They are very good bikes. Most Asian motorcycles would start needing engine works around 30K miles, BMW go way beyond that. I would get the twin cylinders (R model), since they have seperate transmission and engine. |

All modern German vehicles are considered some of the best or THE best in world. BMW is no exception. The fit and finish teamed with their legendary relaibility makes them highly sought after and a bit of a status symbol. This means though that they are quite pricey. Plus, all machines eventually break down and when they do it can get really expensive really fast with a BMW. My only other thought is of a person nature. I find all of their models to be quite boring frankly. Even their new Super Sport bike just looks... usual. If I'm paying $20+ thousand for a bike I want it to look cool, not like my Dentist owns one. The Japanese and Italians can give you a lot more personality for your money. If you want to be seen riding around on a cold, sterile, beige symbol of everything that's wrong with modern design then go ahead and lust away:) |

BMW's are very good touring/ sport touring bikes and they are making a lot of noise in the racing circuit with the S1000RR which was named sport bike of the year for 2010. Yes, they can be costly to repair and insurance is a bit higher but your getting an outstanding bike. I own a 2007 BMW F800ST with ABS and I long for the day to take the bike back out and do some riding when winter is done...Every winter seems longer than the last. I put over 10,000 miles on the bike the first year I had it and I'd say its just as good as my brothers 2008 Honda Interceptor. We did Deals Gap over the Summer and I was averaging 45 miles per gallon compared to his 35. The lil' beemer held its own and was a BLAST to drive like that and was very comfortable riding down there too. It seems when you ride a BMW motorcycle it shows your serious about riding and you won't accept anything less. I would definitely tell you to get your BMW and enjoy your ride. Pros: Very good quality-A friend of mine has 160,000 on an boxer motor and has never opened it up for maintenance or anything. Always turns heads BMW has a full line to suit your needs (Touring, Sport touring, Street, BMX, etc) Fun to ride and most BMW's are loaded with features. Hold value MUCH better than most anything else. Cons: Can be expensive to repair/ maintain Not a lot of BMW Motorcycle dealerships so you should live "close " to one in case. Insurance is somewhat higher. |

Theyre known for being about to cover high milages - th eboxer engined BMW bikes. made even more popular by the series , long way round. Personally i dont like them as the boxer engined BM's have an old-mans smell about them . The GS range is too bullky for me and the avialabily of over the counter parts isnt as much as with Japanese bikes. In UK there is only two places you can get BMW parts- the Dealer and Motowerks... Also if you have problems with a BMW, electrical gremlins can be a nightmare to resolve as most bike mechanics do not have the equipment to diagnose techincal electrical problems- so you will have to find a bmw mechanical guru or take it to the dealer- which the latter doesnt mean it will get fixed(as one of my freind's found out with his bmw- he regreted selling his honda as the bmw he owned for 4 months and it spend 3 in the dealer to which they hadnt a clue). On boxer engines th clutch isnt as easy to replace as on a japanese bike. you have to split the gearbox from the engine, which on an R80rt means removing all the back end to get enough clearance. On a japanese bike a clutch change takes up to an hour on a bmw, up to the best part of half a day. A clutch on both Bmw's and japanese bikes can last upto 90 thousand plus....I think bm clutches might last longer if not used or previously used as a work bike(courier, police, motorcycle training school, paramedic etc) The things that tend to break on a BMW seem to be hard to reach without removing alot of parts. |
